I’ll be the first person to tell you I dislike exercising. I’ve never really exercised in my entire life. I get so excited to start a program but never stick to it. I’m the one who started Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred and quit after 4 days. So for me to write this post I’m sorta a hypocrite. But, I’ve come to terms that I must exercise in some way, shape, or form. A strenuous routine though…forget about it.
Here are some things I do every single week that get my heart racing to burn a few extra calories in my day.
I park at a parking garage at work that is about 1/4 mile from work. I park in the second level so I have to go down two flights of stairs to get to the lower level. So I’m walking a half mile a day 5 days a week just there. There are a few hills and I’m always in heels so I’m burning a few calories here.
I then take the stairs at work. I work on the 5th floor. I run up them when I arrive at work, down them and back up twice after I eat my lunch and back down when I go home. So that is like taking the stairs once in a 30 floor building. I do this 5 days a week. If your a stay at home mom or dad run up and down the stairs at your home a few times a day. I do this as well way to many times a day.
When the weather permits we take the kids to the park at Gavyn’s school. There is a huge 2 mile horseshoe shaped road all the way around his school. The kids play with daddy while mommy takes a jog. Make sure you have your iPod attached with some good tunes playing and it’s like cake. I can do two miles like nothing. It makes me feel amazing! I try to do this 4 times a week but I live here in wonderful New York State so the weather rarely allows this.
I love Fitness On Demand! There are some amazing routines on there that are simple but effective. Check out the channel and choose from a variety of programs from toning, to cardio, walking in place, to getting your butt and thighs ready for the summer. I will admit I’m not good at turning the channel on often but I have the feeling to kick my butt a couple of times a week I’ll turn on a fat blasting program and do this. The 12 minute ones are good for me:) Purchase a set of hand weights and burn more calories. I like the neoprene ones. The kids love exercising with me when I do this so make it a fun time with your child as well. It will get them wanting to do it and keep them fitter now and for years to come as they hopefully will enjoy exercising as they grow. Do an exercise routine first thing in the morning. It gets you energized and makes you feel good all day long. Eat a yummy protein filled breakfast afterwards though. And make sure your drinking lots of water throughout the day. I drink at least (12)8oz glasses a day!
At work I’m a little crazy. I sit in a cubby answering phones all day so tend to find myself doing ab exercises in my chair, and doing leg lifts which work my abs as well. Just sit back in your chair(ours lean back a little) and lift forward a tiny bit. It really works!
Anything is better than nothing. I refuse to spend money on gym memberships as it will never get used…so that’s wasted money. I really want a stationary bike or treadmill in the future though for the long winter months where I pack on extra pounds or to ride while I’m watching my favorite shows. I do not feel there is any need to be in a gym sweating it out for an hour a day either. Everyday things can get the calories to burn. Cleaning, parking further away at the store, mowing the lawn, walking the dog, going bowling with the family, walk to the store if it’s close if you only have a few things to get, stop and do some jumping jacks or squats…anything. Spring cleaning time is here. Major calories are burned moving your furniture around, mopping the floors and doing yard work. It doesn’t have to be hard. I’ve learned that doing something even if it’s little is great. If your into exercising or going to the gym that is great!
Get up, and get moving. You’ll feel good about yourself and you really will see a difference!
