Creativity is something I lack. I really wish I could just close my eyes and picture something, run out and purchase supplies and make what I pictured, unfortunately I can’t. What I can do is encourage creativity in my children by placing scissors, paint, crayons, paper, glue sticks and other kid’s art supplies in front of them, and tell them to make me a beautiful piece of artwork. And they always do. They have made some pretty amazing things that make me proud. I enjoy craft time with the kids and Zoe has a real desire of anything crafty. I’m always joking with her telling her that when she is older she can make me beautiful floral wreaths, and fun home décor for our home.
I run a daycare, which means on a daily basis I’m online searching for ideas for the craft slot in our schedule, as this is a favorite time for every child in my care. Gummy Lump has helped me a lot this past month with their 300 Crafts for Kids Project which is being held on their blog and also posting the projects on their Facebook page. The project is simple. One easy craft a day for the year of 2011. The crafts are geared for preschool aged children, with modifications for children with special needs, and there is an area for us with older children on how we can make it more fun and challenging for them. I think this project will really help many of us who are running out of ideas.
Zoe and I have been busy creating fun projects with a collection of Melissa & Doug art supplies that Gummy Lump sent us. When I checked out the site the first thing Zoe wanted to make was the Valentine’s Foil Heart Kids Craft. This was a simple craft, which was easy for my three year old, with basically no supervision. I did all of the cutting for her, but she did everything else. Her favorite part was adding the red glitter (which we didn’t have we used red sugar crystals) and adding the lips on the back using the palm stampers and the jumbo stamp pads.
A few days later they posted up a Teddy Bear Love Kids Craft and Zoe and Gavyn without a doubt wanted to make these. This is a paper plate craft which you paint, add hearts for ears and is super adorable. Although, our bears came out kind of purple and a little silly looking we still had fun. We used a mixture of poster paints to paint the bears and cut out different colored pieces of construction paper for the ears, and nose and added googly eyes and pipe cleaners for the mouth. We didn’t have large eyes and with a three year old insisting on doing everything they don’t exactly resemble bears. We added bows on both of our girl bears. Gavyn threw his away, I still don’t understand why.
