Wow, 9 years old today. It doesn’t seem possible. This time nine years ago, I was going through my bags to make sure everything was packed, writing in your baby book as we were scheduled for induction at 6am, July 9, 2002. I could not sleep. I kept wondering how my first labor would be, and if it would be painful. I just wanted to hold you and see you. Labor was not easy, and was painful, but we made it through it all. After 12 hours of labor, and one hour 10 minutes of pushing, you arrived into the world at 6:13PM, July 9, 2002 weighing 7lbs 12oz and 20 1/2 inches long. You were healthy, and beautiful, just as I pictured. Identical to your daddy. We named you Gavyn as daddy loved the band Bush with head singer Gavin Rossdale and the street name next to use was Riley Ave. So there you have your name, spelled different though…Gavyn Riley.
You have made me the proudest mom in the world, and I could never ask for a son as amazing as you. Nine years ago you fought to stay here with us, and made it through a difficult time, not once but twice. You are strong, brave, shy, stubborn, handsome, fast, smart and I could go on and on.
I pulled out your baby book tonight to read everything I wrote in it. You loved Rugrats when you were small, mommy’s favorite song was Foolish by Ashanti and You Got It Bad by Usher. A gallon of gas was only $1.37 when you were born, boy have times changed in nine years. Your favorite baby food was squash, and you slept a lot due to your heart defect. I wrote you a letter in your baby book when you were extremely ill fighting for your life and may have to have open heart surgery.
“Gavyn you are strong and brave. You are fighting for your life to stay here. You will overcome this however now you have a heart problem. You have what is called a VSD and coarctation of the aorta, don’t be scared baby, you will be okay. Mom and dad are by your side all day. Daddy leaves to go to work but comes back every night. Stay strong and brave. You will outgrow this, and be off medicines and out of the hospital soon. I will be strong for you, just like you have stayed strong for us. We will take care of you, as are the doctors. Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg is treating you amazing. Hang in there sweetie. I promise I will take care of you, you are our whole world. Your heart will heal sweetie. We love you.”
You healed and you are here!!! Gavyn you have made us proud parents. You are an amazing son, who does awesome at everything you do. I hope you have the best 9th birthday ever. We love you so much. Happy Birthday Buddy ♥ Mommy, Daddy and Zoe
