Safety 1st Prograde Health VersaScan Talking Thermometer Review

Cold and flu season has been here for a few months now and according to the CDC each year up to 20% of people come down with the flu, with activity peaking in February.  Not only does this make parents worry and go around cleaning like maniacs, we have to deal with high fevers and cold symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses and coughing.  Unfortunately, I have other concerns that I have to treat on a daily basis; a child who gets recurring fevers monthly.  You may remember when Zoe was diagnosed with Vesicoureteral Reflux (urinary reflux) at the end of 2010.  This was the cause of her high fevers and she still gets them weekly and monthly.  Luckily, since being on antibiotics for over a year now, she hasn’t had any urinary tract infections, but we still have to check her temperature daily.  If she has a high fever for longer than 24 hours we have to bring her in, so having a high quality thermometer  essential for our family.

We currently use an ear thermometer which was recommended by our doctor, but to have more than one is really going to help when we are out or not at home.  Safety 1st sent us their new thermometer the ProGrade VersaScan TALKING Thermometer which is talking thermometer for use in the ear.  safety 1st prograde health versascan talking thermometerThe Safety 1st Prograde talking thermometer is a basic thermometer which has a probe tip with cover, an on button which is also the button to take the temperature, a memory button, sound button all with an illuminated display which is easy readable.

The day this arrived Zoe was not feeling well, so it was the ideal time to put this to the test.  I installed the AAA batteries(included) removed the probe cover, turned it on, placed the tip in her ear and pushed the button to take her temperature.   With a 1 second rapid reading, who could complain?  Once the temperature is delivered the display will light up and talk to you however if you do not want to use the talking feature this can be turned off.  She had a high fever this day so we saw a sad face on the display and the on/measure button turned red.  This is the  fever alert ring.  safety 1st prograde talking thermometerIf  there is no fever present user will see a happy face on the display and the ring will be green.  Safety 1st does recommend that three readings be taken from the same ear waiting two minutes between readings, and taking the highest of the three.  I have done this with every reading and it is very accurate.safety 1st prograde

I like that I can set the language, volume, date and time with this thermometer and beneficial that this has memory and will store up to 30 measurements.  For someone who takes their child’s temperature every day, I no longer need to use pen and paper to remember what her previous temperature was.

The default setting is ear mode, however objects such as bath water, food and beverages can also be measured.  This is wonderful for families with infants to test temperatures.

This is a high quality thermometer which has operated well for us.  There are many features, it measures fast and the instructions have a temperature chart as well as the back of the thermometer.  The Safety 1st ProGrade VersaScan Talking Thermometer retails for $39.99 and can be purchased at Target!
