Molding compounds have been a material I have encouraged since my children were a very young age. They enable kids to use their creativity, imaginations, develops fine motor skills not to mention hand-eye coordination and requires no batteries. Yes, they can get messy, but compounds such as Sandzini are pleasing for younger and older children, and that is all that matters. Sandzini, by Ohio Art, is a magical sculpting compound that really feels like sand.
We checked out the Sandzini Creator Set Ice Cream Parlor and this set has been played with almost daily from Zoe and I admit, I’ve had so much fun with it as well. This set includes everything you need to create fun ice cream cones, sundaes, Popsicle, ice cream sandwiches and much more. There are tools to roll out the dough, a wheel cutter and a sculpting tool plus blue, brown, green, pink, purple and yellow Sandzini which arrive in resealable bags for storage so the compound does not dry out when not in use. This compound is similar to Play Doh, is pliable, stays together, but has a grittier feel and has glitter effects which kids love.
To get started creating, Sandzini does need to be squished and squeezed for a few minutes before using.
Because Zoe is a visual person, she took a look at the few step-by-step instructions to create an ice cream cone, cupcake and petit four but her imagination ran wild after making those. She really loves Sandzini.
From a parent point of view, the open-ending play benefits are wonderful. There is no right or wrong way to create. Sandzini offers infinite possibilities with children taking advantage of free play. I highly recommend giving the child a work area with a cutting board or cardboard as they will be using cutting tools with the Sandzini. I also encourage you to tell children not to rub their eyes while playing and to make sure when they have finished to wash their hands thoroughly. We have had so much fun with pretend play with food creating yummy treats everyone enjoys.
There are many Sandzini products and products are non toxic and gluten-free although they are not for eating:)
