I had the great pleasure of working with Hasbro during 2012, featuring new board games and Family Game Night on my blog. When House Party chose me to host a Hasbro Happier New Year’s Game Night Party on New Year’s Eve I was ecstatic. Playing games with my family is the perfect way to spend time together, learn in a fun way and teaches children all sorts of things such as letter recognition and reading, rules, counting and much more.
I hosted the party on New Year’s Eve with many family, friends and their children showing up. I prepared for the party by creating signs, setting up the game table, decorating, positioning the games in the center of the table, preparing snacks and reading directions for the games we weren’t familiar with.
We were sent four games; Yahtzee, Draw Something, Scrabble Catch Phrase and Twister. Talk about FUN! It was time to get the party started when guests started arriving around 7PM. After taking photos of those who attended (minus 4 who showed up later)
we decided to start with Twister, a game none of us adults have played since our youth. The kids had such a blast and even us adults did even if we only made it three rounds. I fell hard on my bottom which left everyone in hysterics, even myself! I loved the changes with two new rules; limbs in the air or choose your move. Twister was a great game for all.
After we ate some food the adults decided to play Scrabble Catch Phrase which was new for all of us. While we played the kids enjoyed some Wii and Karaoke. If you have never played Scrabble Catch Phrase I highly recommend buying. This is an electronic hand-held gaming unit, played in teams where the game tells a word. The person holding the unit has to give teammates clues to try and guess the word. Player can choose a category from everyday life, fun & games, the world, variety and entertainment. You’ll find some easy phrases such as play dead, pain in the neck and more difficult such as french poodle, Rio DE Janeiro and Freudian slip.
The only rules in the game is no rhyming, first letters or parts of the word. If you are caught the other team gets the point. If your team guesses correctly before the timer buzzes, pass the unit to the other team. When the buzzer finally buzzes whoever has the unit loses a point to the other side. It is a fast paced game especially when players can guess quickly. Tons of laughs and entertainment. This was definitely my personal favorite of the evening as well as the guests.
Everyone enjoyed a game of Yahtzee which took forever with so many people and all loved Draw Something, the very popular and addictive mobile app game, which is now available as a board game. 2-4 players can play (we played in teams as couples). Just like the original, there are cards with three words, ranked by difficulty with points. The drawer will draw the picture they choose and the other players will yell out guesses.
Once one person shouts correctly the drawer and the correct guess gets however many coins the word was worth. The first person to 15 coins wins the game. Draw Something includes drawing pads, crayons, cards and coins to move. Another fun party or family game night game.
This Hasbro party was a blast and we all made resolutions such as playing once a week with family, no cheating ever, and to buy a new Hasbro game monthly. Get the kids in on the action, you’ll love it. There are games for all ages and interests, so no one ever has to feel left out. Our game night champion was my best friend, who happened to be very smart at guessing drawings and words from Catch Phrase.
This party was a huge hit. Thank you to House Party and Hasbro for this fun opportunity!

That looks like so much fun. I’m so glad my kids are getting old enough to play board games. We don’t have a regular game night, but I think it would be a fun family tradition to start.
