This is a compensated campaign with The Motherhood and Milk Unleashed. All opinions & thoughts 100% my own.
Milk is a beverage I didn’t care for as a child, but as I continue to work on my health and well-being I have been drinking it a ton. Fat-free chocolate milk is a post-workout beverage I drink often for the protein and carbohydrates to help with muscle recovery. Not only that but I add milk to smoothies, oatmeal, protein shakes or just plain mashed bananas mixed with almond milk.
Did you know there is shelf stable milk that offers the same nutritional value as regular milk but is an easy and convenient way that you can take on-the go? You’re jumping up and down, right moms?
Last week I was honored to attend a Milk Unleashed online briefing held by Giovanna Lemos, Tetra Pak Communications Manager and Judy Lynes & Janette Rizk from the Tetra Pak PR Team. The briefing discussed everything anyone would ever want to know about shelf safe milk from what it is to how the process works, to where you can enjoy shelf safe milk and where you can buy it.
Since I’m familiar with shelf safe milk I was interested to learn more about the process of shelf safe milk.
Shelf Safe Milk has been around since the 1960′s!! It requires no refrigeration until the package is opened. But how? It is a UHT or Ultra High Temperature meaning the milk has been pasteurized at a higher temperature, but for a shorter time. The process looks like this.
Tetra Pak Shelf Safe Packaging
So you’re probably wondering what makes a shelf safe carton. I did too.
Shelf safe cartons are packaged in Tetra Pak, an eco-friendly package made of 70% paper and is recyclable, keeping out light, air and harmful contaminants. Tetra Pak has six layers of protection. The first layer to seal in liquid, then an adhesion layer. The third an aluminum foil barrier for oxygen, flavor and light, then another adhesion layer. A paper layer is added for stability and strength and a final top layer to protect against outside moisture. Doing this preserves the taste and flavor so ANYONE can enjoy milk, anytime, anyplace, and safely!
I enjoy buying single serve chocolate milk for my kids for school and am addicted to almond milk to bring with me to my boot camp sessions. Boot camp is held on the same night as soccer, so after my kick butt workout, I head to soccer with my single serve almond milk (I keep cold in the fridge as almond milk should not be froze due to separation) and an already mashed banana with a scoop of vanilla whey protein powder in my shaker bottle filled with ice. At soccer I add my milk, shake up and have my banana protein shake!
Shelf safe milk can also be froze making it a wonderful ice pack for children’s lunches as it will keep the rest of the lunch cold and thaw to enjoy by lunch time. It is also ideal for camping, emergency kits, playgrounds, the diaper bag, sporting events, traveling, beach trips and so much more.
You’ll appreciate that shelf safe milk comes in handy single serve cartons and 32 oz. cartons in brands you love including Organic Valley, TruMoo, Horizon, Almond Breeze, Silk and many others! You can find shelf safe milk at your grocers in a variety of flavors, organic and nutritionally enhanced. In my experience they are usually stocked near the dry milk in the baking aisle or in the cereal aisle. They may be near the dairy aisle as well. You can also find shelf safe milk online at Amazon.com.
