Every Day is a Big Day! Complete Mini™ Missions to Earn 2 FREE Scholastic Books

October is the ideal time to welcome fall. The beauty in backyards from the changing leaves, cool crisp air, pumpkins are everywhere and the scent of apple and cinnamon fills the air. Every fall I attempt to let my creative side shine, which doesn’t happen to often. You see, this mama has no creativity but with a six year old that enjoys using her imagination, I try my best.

That’s why this October Zoe, Gavyn and I went outdoors to think of some fun fall crafts we could do as part of the Kellogg’s® Frosted Mini-Wheats® and Scholastic Every Day is a Big Day program. The program is inviting families to complete Mini™ Missions each month for an opportunity to earn free Scholastic books, plus be entered into a sweepstakes where 131 prizes will be awarded to schools and communities. Woohoo for free books, to inspire imagination, boost brain cells and master language and thinking skills. Reading is a fun form of entertainment with an array of benefits.

Each month there are new Mini™ Missions themes:

August – Nutrition Tradition
September – Outdoor Explorer
October – Creative Moments
November – Conversation Bites
December – Give and Get Back

Since the theme for October is creative moments, we fulfilled four kid-friendly activities that both children would appreciate.

Bake fall cupcakes

We kept this simple by buying a box cake mix, prepared as instructed on the box, frosted with our favorite frosting and decorated with fall sweets. We used fall color M&M’s, candy corn and gummy worms. Gavyn says we had to use worms since they are gearing up for winter, to hibernate.

Make the colors of fall collage

Zoe really wanted to head out and pick up different sized leaves in an array of gorgeous fall colors. Once we got them back home, she wrote in fall colors on a white poster board; the colors of fall and glued each leaf to the poster board. This is a great activity for children of any age to see the beauty of the changing leaves, up close and personal! To make it more educational, discuss the leaf type and ask children if they know why leaves change colors in the fall.

Leaf rubbing

I’m 33 years old and still love this fall nature craft. Again, we headed outdoors to pick up different leaves in various sizes. We had several paper bags laying around, so I just cut the bottoms off, peeled some crayons and Zoe and Gavyn placed the leaf under the bag and began to rub. To make this easier for children you can tape the leaf so it doesn’t move on them. Once finished, they had a beautiful display of leaves now in color, with the veins showing really well. This works best if you position the leaf veins up and rub those on the paper.

Pumpkin painting

Purchase a few small pumpkin pie pumpkins, draw a face on the pumpkins and have children paint faces. Luckily, I was in the store and they were selling kits with three pumpkins, acrylic paint and a paint brush so I just purchased that so the kids could paint the faces. This craft is a lot less messy then carving an actual pumpkin and can be displayed in the home for months.
