Kohl’s has provided gift cards to give back and as giveaway in this article. All opinions 100% my own.
To many kids, the holidays are a time we spend with family, eat food and get presents from Santa and family. It is a challenge to teach children the true meaning of Christmas, because commercials thrive featuring the best toys, toy book circulars arrive in the mail and the store shelves are brimming with exciting toys kids crave.
But we have to teach our children that giving is an important aspect during the holidays, to open our hearts to make a difference in someone’s life. When you are out and about and give that $1 to the red kettle for the Salvation Army, explain to your kids that the money goes to local charities for those in need, who aren’t as fortunate. We have done a ton already this year. We donated hats and gloves to our local schools for children in need. We sent off our shoebox for Operation Christmas Child for the second year. We graciously place toys in Toys for Tots donation boxes in local stores. I could list a few more, but this year my kids will get to help me shop for a family in need, as we are giving back with Kohl’s!
Kohl’s and the United Way are pairing my family with a local family, that is in need this holiday season. We have been provided a $150 Kohl’s gift card to shop. We haven’t shopped just yet but I can’t wait to see what my kids choose. I know they will choose cold weather gear because the cold weather means new clothes are definitely needed. Zoe (6) already told me she wants to get a pair of boots for a child so that child can go build a snowman or run in the snow.
Speaking to her about this campaign, her eyes welled up a bit. She said to me “how can this happen mommy? How come there are some kids that don’t have toys, clothes or food?” It went into a long lesson of why and how it can happen. We used her daddy as an example, when his childhood home burnt to the ground, and they were left with nothing. They had the clothing on their backs, their vehicle and nothing else. We explained how our local Red Cross helped them with temporary shelter, food and other needs for a short time until they could rebuild their lives. Without the community donating, who knows what help they would have had.
Kohl’s has an amazing list of their top dream toys for children of all ages, so I know we’ll find something for the kids we’ll be shopping for. We’ll only be shopping for educational toys to help with reading, vocabulary and other learning areas. Kohl’s has learning toys such at the VTech Little Apps tablet toddlers would love, or stacking blocks for infants. I’ll find the perfect educational learning toy for a child of any age.
This shop is going to help my children see the needs right here in our own community, bringing them compassion now and into their adulthood. Shopping for a family in need this holiday season, will allow me to talk more to my children about why it is important to give back not only at the holidays, but all year long. I want my children to make a difference in someones life now, so when they are older they will continue.
The season of giving is here. I’m so thrilled our family will be able to help a family less fortunate, so they can have a joyous holiday. I couldn’t imagine the face of a child without any gifts to open, so we are going to make an impact on a child or two this year.
