When I began blogging in 2009, I didn’t truly believe this would become a full-time career. So when my blog took off a few years ago, I had to become more of a professional which meant a custom design, higher quality articles, learning basic HTML, graphics (I’m still horrible at these) and everything else that bloggers need.
Here I am five years after the origination of my blog and finally getting around to creating a media kit, freely without having to pay my designer. This is HUGE for me as I do not have many skills in this area.
Have you been wanting a media kit but do not want to pay to have one made? Office 365 is your solution. I recently received a complimentary copy of Office 365 to use PowerPoint to attempt a media kit. Remember, I do not do graphics, so this is very elementary. Before creating, outline what you would like in your media kit. Here are some ideas…
- About your blog
- Social media links
- Personal background
- Services offered
In PowerPoint I opened a blank presentation and began my project. For the project you can add as many slides (pages) as you’d like. For my media kit (remember this is very basic) I added 5 slides however I can go back and add more as time goes on.
Slide 1: I added a title, a logo and an image of myself with a short detailed description of what my mission is; to save parents money. You can change colors to match your blog, choose from tons of fonts, change size, and add images, shapes, add hyperlinks and so much more. Here is slide 1.
This is the first page brands will see when they go into my media kit. It shows my blog and me.
Slide 2: This is my blog stats page. Remember to always keep this information updated. I included a three month average of my visitors, unique visitors and pageviews. I also had to include my 2013 stats since I was at almost a half a million visitors! Yes, I’m bragging. This slide is where I also added social media stats as well as audience, location and top traffic sources. This page is informative and to the point.
Slide 3: Services offered. Brands and PR want to know what you offer, so this is the page I included all the information on. I did not add my rates as they change for the services offered depending what a brand wants. I also added in a few ambassadorship logos and social media icons on the right hand side for brands to easily find me on social media.
Slide 4: Testimonials! Potential brands would love to see what other brands have said about your work. I added in a few sentences in this blank slide.
Slide 5: All about me! I wanted a personal area for reps to get to know a little about me and my family. Learning about the person you are going to work with is important. I chatted about why I started my blog, my likes, pets and family. I then added personal photographs of my family at the bottom and food photos on the right hand side.
You can complement with anything you wish, it is your media kit, but just know you can MAKE YOUR OWN MEDIA KIT easily with Office 365 and PowerPoint. I have no skills in using PowerPoint and found it simple by clicking around and getting a good feel for it. It uses Word which I am familiar with, so it was straightforward learning it.
PowerPoint even allows animations, transitions and more. When you are ready, click review in the menu to check spelling/grammar and then save as. I saved as a PDF and saved the original as PowerPoint so I can go back and edit monthly. While my media kit may not be over-the-top fantastic like others, I’m proud I made it myself. I can keep it up to date by changing a few things every month, can add more slides with more information such as example articles and brands can have any information they need about my blog.
And remember, with Office 365, you can create, edit and read documents all on your iPad as Office 365 is available on the iPad. Perfect for those that travel, use an iPad exclusively or receive an email with a document and you’re not near a PC. This is great news! And I love that no matter what device I’m using or what device a brand is using, they’ll see the same thing when they open my media kit. Whether on a desktop, iPad or smartphone. No crazy viewing issues!
