The HP Pavilion TouchSmart was provided for review purposes, all opinions 100% my own
Shopping for a new laptop can be a daunting task. With so many brands with the latest technology how do you know which one will be perfect for you? Remember, years ago when laptops first hit shelves the prices were $800+? That isn’t the case anymore. Now you can find affordable laptops with everything you need that will also be your ideal travel companion.
Just like the HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14-b109wm Sleekbook exclusive to Walmart . This sleek black laptop arrives with minimal setup that took only minutes until I was on my way to blogging, browsing and connecting on social media.
Once removed from the packaging, the battery will be installed which is different from any other laptop I’ve owned (and I’ve owned 7!) The battery once inserted is the back of the laptop.
Plugin the power cord to the AC/adapter and wall and hit the power button. Once turned on a Microsoft login will be required and you will be able to customize with colors. It will then install programs and apps and within minutes you’ll be able to use the new laptop.
The HP black 14″ Pavilion TouchSmart laptop is a Windows 8 operating system so when the computer turns on you’ll see the Windows 8 start screen. This is where apps can be added and you can move, resize and unpin apps from this screen as well as personalize it to your liking.
I don’t use the start screen often, I guess I’m stuck in my ways of the desktop, but if you are like me, not to worry. Just click the desktop icon and you’ll be in comfortable territory, but don’t let the start screen scare you. It’s neat, like a mobile phone. Just click an app such as Facebook and it’ll open. There are apps for everything in the Windows Store!
Back to the desktop. This is familiar but you should know that there are charms with Windows 8 operating system. When you point in the upper or lower right hand corners of the screen, the charms will display.
Charms are search, share, start, devices and settings. This is where you can search apps or files, share files or photos on social media, go to the start screen, send files to printers, shut down, restart and change settings.
And you probably guessed by now from the “TouchSmart” wording that this laptop is a touchscreen! Have a love hate relationship with the pesky touch pad on a laptop? Well, with this laptop you can touch the screen to do everything. Close a browser page, open your charms, open or close an app, ANYTHING. Scroll, tap, zoom, swipe simply by touching the screen. My kids have been enjoying playing their games with the touchscreen instead of having to use the touchpad mouse. They think “it is really cool!”
But what I like most is the lightweight thin design and the full-sized island style keyboard. This laptop is less than 1” thick and only 4.41 lbs! It is thin, ideal for traveling as it has the smaller 14” screen. I placed it next to my HP 2000 15.6” laptop so you can see the difference.
And specs. The part that I have NO IDEA about. Hard drive, RAM, CPU etc, it makes my head spin. So, here are some specifications of the HP Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook:
- Intel Celeron B877 processor 1.50 GHZ
- 4GB DDR3 SDRAM system memory (expandable to 8GB)
- 500GB SATA hard drive
- 10/100Base-T Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
- 14″ diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit touchscreen display (1366 x 768)
- Intel HD Graphics
To be honest none of this means anything to me. I only use my laptop to work so this is adequate for me. I believe the Celeron processor is an entry-level processor which is ideal for basic computer tasks like I use. I don’t’ need a super fast processor so I’m OK with the Celeron but if you are going to put too much load, you may see the affects, so this is not the laptop for a gamer.
You’ll also be pleased to know that this has an HP TrueVision HD webcam (it looks fabulous as well), HP CoolSense to keep the laptop cool and what I loved learning about when I attended the live HP Show and Tech interactive demo on March 26, was this laptop has HP ProtectSmart. This is basically a hard drive shutoff in case it falls and gets banged. The presenters said it has been tested from 4 feet! This is good news. My laptop before my previous HP had accidentally fallen a few times, causing me to have two hard drive failures. Not cool when I only backup photos, videos and files once a month. I lost quite a bit when that happened. There are also many programs installed.
As a blogger, long battery life, external USB ports, headphone jacks and SD card reader is necessary. This laptop has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 universal 2.0 USB port, plus an HDMI and LAN. The four cell Li-ion battery will produce about 6 hours of battery life.
For only $328.00 this is a wonderful laptop with elegant design. We’re thinking about getting one for our almost 12 year old for his birthday as the small size would be great for a child’s first laptop.
To keep the Sleekbook lightweight, this does not have a DVD drive. I don’t miss it because I rarely use the drive.
