The summer is full of fun whether at the pool, beach, camping, hiking, on vacation, sitting by a campfire, riding outdoor toys such as bikes, 4-wheelers and scooters and so much more. We are keeping busy with tons of outdoor activities but with that comes wounds; minor and major.
Basic scrapes and injuries from falling, insect stings and bites, stepping on something because you’re barefoot, collision with another child, road rash…we all know what outdoor summer activities can lead to. I have been very lucky with my children with only one major injury resulting in a trip to the ER.
When Gavyn was three, he thought a wheelie indoors on his tricycle would be fun, until he fell back and hit his head, resulting in two staples. Last year he wiped out on his bike scraping his entire body from chest to feet. I’ll spare you those gruesome photos.
Safety comes first in my home. Our children never go on their scooters or bikes without their helmets. I like them to wear sneakers when running and playing outdoors as flip flops aren’t safe and we rarely let the kids run around barefoot. So I’m always prepared for those unexpected boo boos at home and while we are away, always having a first aid kit with me in my purse, car and beach bag. My first aid kit contains the following items:
Adhesive Bandages: Necessary for children because they make boo boos all better, right? Kids believe so but we use them to cover up the bleeding, to heal faster and to protect the wound from infection.
Instant Cold Packs: These are always with us for our journeys outdoors. If my children were to slip and hurt themselves I want to apply ice as soon as possible to help with swelling.
Antibiotic Cream: I’m a firm believer antibiotic creams help with infection and kill germs that may have gotten inside the wound.
Thermometer: This isn’t a normal for many however with a child with urinary reflux, the onset of a fever is our first indication of a UTI. I can’t chance it and need to get Ibuprofen in my daughter as quickly as possible, so an ear thermometer is always with us, as is the fever reducer.
Gauze: I use gauze when an adhesive bandage might be too small. Gauze was needed for Gavyn when he wiped out on his bike.
Sunscreen: I never leave my home without it. I do not want my family to be in agony from sunburn or to damage their skin. Plus we need it to reapply after water fun or long hours outdoors.
Puracyn® OTC Wound & Skin Care: Puracyn OTC Wound & Skin Care is a product you have never heard of, but it is a must in all first-aid kits as proper care is necessary to help prevent infections and promote healing. Puracyn is a light, liquid wound & skin care solution that is available over-the-counter to help the body heal the wound naturally. Puracyn is perfect when water isn’t available and easy to use. Just apply with a few sprays until the wound is cleaned. It cleans out dirt and debris without the need of touching or rubbing the skin. Puracyn is doctor tested without alcohol or dyes, so the kids won’t scream when cleaning up a cut. It arrives in a convenient pump bottle, perfect for on-the-go lifestyles.
That is all I carry with me for first-aid essentials. I keep it to a minimum because that’s all we have ever needed. And I’m loving Puracyn! Did you know wounds heal best when cleaned properly? Puracyn is the first step in first aid. Puracyn® OTC Wound & Skin Care is available in the first aid aisle at Meijer, Rite Aid, Walgreens and other retailers nationwide in 4 oz. bottles, for a suggested retail price of $14.99.
Puracyn® Favorite Summer Firsts Giveaway
Puracyn is here for all our summer needs. The first time your child rides their bike without training wheels, complains of bug bites, swims in the pool or ocean, eats their first ice cream cone, goes on their first road trip or climbs their first tree.
We headed to Letchworth State Park that has three waterfalls a few weekends ago braving the chilly temperatures. Both my kids have seen waterfalls, but were too young to remember, so this was a summer first for both of them that they can recall.
We had a few cuts and scrapes that day too from lots of hiking. We know accidents happen in the summer but with Puracyn those ouchies will be cleaned in no time.
