If you talked to me back in middle/high school about science it was an absolute yawn fest for me. Dissecting frogs? Eww, I refused. The Bunsen burner was cool though. And I liked space, but a lot of it I could care less about. I say that but made it all the way to physics before I finally quit science. As I’ve aged, science has become extremely fascinating to me. I missed out on a lot from not paying attention so trying to watch, read and learn as much as I can now. Not only for me but for my young children. Teaching and showing my children the whys and how’s of how things in this world work, is building an array of developmental skills such as communication, problem-solving, understanding, and other skills needed in everyday life.
Science is all around us and Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments is the ideal book to have at home to perform hands-on experiments so children (and adults) can see first-hand how science works. Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments is written by stay-at-home dad Mike Adamick, where he shares fun, innovative science experiments in all areas of science; chemistry, biology, physics, planet earth and the human body.
Gavyn and Zoe glanced through the book for some experiments to do and were pleased to see a few we’ve already done such as soap clouds. This is where a bar of Ivory Soap is placed in the microwave and it expands looking like a cloud, fun for all to watch!
Both children agreed on the space of air science experiment in the planet earth chapter. This experiment teaches all about air and shows them how it is there even though we can’t see, smell or touch it. We can only feel it when the wind blows. During this experiment we all were able to see how air takes up space and what happens when the temperature changes. The materials used were a small-mouth glass bottle, balloon, pot of boiling water, pot of ice water, funnel, Play-Doh, water and a straw.
Placing the balloon over the bottle, we positioned the bottle in the pot of boiling water. To Zoe’s amazement the balloon inflated. Exciting stuff for a 7 year old to observe.
We removed the bottle from the pot and placed it in an ice bath.
A few moments later the balloon was inside the bottle (unfortunately, I forgot to snap a photo) but when we allowed the bottle to sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes, the balloon was back to its original state. This science experiment revealed how air was inside the bottle and when heated, the air expanded, but the balloon was trapping the air, which is why the balloon inflated. When cooled, the balloon deflated.
We then added a funnel, where water just ran into the bottle, but when Play-Doh is added to seal the funnel, kids eyes get wide with amazement, as the water stayed in the funnel
with nowhere to go as the water isn’t heavy enough to push its way down, until a straw is added to give the water an escape route. The kids loved this experiment!
We have done many but we also shined pennies using ¼ cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt and a glass. The kids found the dirtiest pennies they could for this project so they could give them a bath.
Pennies are made from copper, which become coated with copper oxide over time. Copper oxide dulls the shine and makes them look dirty, so we were set to make them sparkle again. I won’t go into detail here but in a glass dissolve the salt in the vinegar. We did a 10 second dip and the kids noticed the part of the penny that was dipped was shinier.
We then dropped all the pennies in, took half out after 5 minutes and the rest out after 10 minutes. The first half we rinsed the second half we didn’t. The pennies that were rinsed remained shiny, even after a few days. The pennies that weren’t rinsed have some weird things happening to them.
According to the book; malachite. This makes them look like they have blue-green speckles on them.
I like how the book is easy to understand with materials needed and step-by-step instructions. There are even illustrations. Each experiment includes an informative did you know piece and the short here’s why it works reading sections tell parents all about the experiments.
Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments are fun projects with many that can be done now as materials needed will already be found in your home. Whether kids want to learn how to change the color of flowers, boil ice, slip an egg into a bottle or make rock candy, you will find that. No science degree needed for these. Go have fun and learn why science works!
