Homemade Hamburger Helper Stroganoff Recipe

I don’t even like to type the word Hamburger Helper.  I think the stuff is nasty, sorry Betty.  I have never cooked this a day in my life, so I really don’t know what it tastes like besides a few people cooking it when I was younger, which I decided to eat something else.   Just never appealed to me.  However, I have made many homemade Hamburger Helper recipes, including cheeseburger, lasagna and this stroganoff.  stroganoff hamburger helperWith this being said, I’ve had many homemade hamburger stroganoff versions.  They were never creamy, dry as can be, and sticky.  YUCK!  I made this version up after taste testing many recipes and deciding to come up with my own recipe.  Yes this is filled with onions and garlic, I’m a lover of both of these as they bring the flavors out so much.  You can adjust to your families liking.

Cook pasta according to package directions-do not overcook.  Soggy pasta is yucky.  Saute the garlic and onions in the 2 tablespoons of butter until soft.  homemade hamburger stroganoff Add the meat and brown.  Add flour and stir constantly until mixed in fully with the meat.  You’ll want to cook about 3 minutes.  Add the can of soup.  It will look like a thick, dry mess.  Stir to distribute.  homemade hamburger stroganoff Add salt and pepper.  Gradually add one can of milk.  It will thicken as it heats.  Simmer about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Stir in the macaroni and mix well.  hamburger helper recipesStir in sour cream, heat through and serve.  You can add fresh parsley( I didn’t have any on hand, but usually do this.)  Sprinkle with fresh ground pepper.

  1. Sounds yummy and I love that its not fun of all those chemicals and preservatives! We do eat a hamburger helper every once in a while…it’s not a gourmet meal, but in a pinch it will work especially paired with a veggie or two!

  2. I need to try this. I make a generic version of HH and the other night is was so disgustingly greasy no one would eat it.

  3. Your recipe looks pretty good. Melinda doesn’t like Hamburger Helper so she probably wouldn’t make this. Can I come over for dinner? LOL.

  4. That sounds pretty good, i’m going to give it a try. I make homemade cream of mushroom soup and freeze it in two cup containers so it would be perfect for this. I’m not a fan of condensed canned soups. I won the HH cheeseburger macaroni so I gave it a try. It was on the salty side and kinda odd tasting but edible. I couldn’t see buying it though..

  5. I have to agree about the Hamburger Helper. But this recipe rocks. Easy enough for even me to follow and it looks tasty. Hubby would absolutely love this. Plus, you get the taste and not all the processed junk. YUMMO!

  6. Thank YOU!!! the kids are going to love this recipe.. not a big fan of the box mixes.. this way i control what and how much of an ingredient goes in.

  7. I made this and it was awesome!!! I didn’t have sour cream, so I used some creamy horseradish sauce and some Hooters Hot Wing sauce. I ate way more than I should have and will def make this again.

    • Hi Dan! Thank you for the feedback I bet it was great with the horsy sauce and wing sauce…sounds great. Glad you enjoyed it:)

  8. I am so going to have to try this!

  9. This was recipe was very good, quick, and easy.

    Your website is really pink.
