I’m not one that is keen on trying new foods. Some foods scare me, but as an adult I’m on a quest to like foods I’ve never heard of. And since I eat healthy, there is one superfood I’m glad I’ve become friends with.
What are chia seeds?
No they are not the ceramic animal friends that you can grow. Chia seeds are not a new food but are gaining in popularity again. Everyone wants chia seeds. According to Nutiva, the Aztec and Mayan empires revered chia seeds as vital nourishment. They are tiny seeds that were once a staple thousands of years ago. And they should be again.
Chia seeds health benefits
This superfood is packed full of nutrition. High in protein ( 3 grams for 1 tablespoon!), high in potassium, low in fat, high in fiber (5 grams for 1 tablespoon!) and an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids. They are also an excellent source of calcium, providing 8% of your daily intake for 1 serving. They also are sugar-free, cholesterol-free and sodium-free and naturally gluten-free!
A superfood indeed.
What do you do with Chia Seeds?
This should be what don’t you do. Sprinkle them on cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, in smoothies, on salads, add to baked goods, make a chia pudding recipe, incorporate into homemade bread crumbs, add to roasted veggies, make chia jams, add to fruit salads, make energy balls…I could go on and on and on…
Have you ever had a chia pet? Before the seeds are spread onto your pre-soaked pet, the seeds need to be moistened. Well, if you add chia seeds into a bowl with water or another type of liquid they expand and gel-up, making them more easily digested. Since I’m the loner healthy eater in my family, I always do 1 tablespoon chia seeds to ¼ cup liquid. Place in container with a lid, shake. Allow to sit, shake again and enjoy. Chia Gel is perfect for everything I listed above as well as soups, creamy recipes, sauces, drinks and more.
The only downfall? Chia seeds will embed into teeth. Have a toothpick handy after consuming:)
