This past January we had Zoe’s 18 month follow-up VCUG appointment for her Vesicoureteral reflux (urinary reflux). Unfortunately, we received news that the reflux had stayed the same. This means we had one of three options. To continue with the daily preventative antibiotic, opt for a non-surgical Deflux treatment or invasive surgical treatment. We spoke with her pediatric urologist about all options and decided to continue with her antibiotic since she has had only two UTIs since being diagnosed. Since she hasn’t had recurring infections, the antibiotic is still working and there are no long term affects.
Due to her reflux she has bedwetting issues, this is normal in children with reflux but it is very difficult to enlighten your child that it is normal and okay. She’s seven and doesn’t understand and is easily embarrassed to stay at friends’ homes because she doesn’t want to bring her GoodNites. So to keep from feeling uncomfortable she stays home. Though she has a medical condition that causes her bedwetting due to her bladder never fully emptying, it is estimated that 1 in 6 children between the ages of 4-12 in the United States suffer from nocturnal enuresis, more commonly known as bedwetting.
There may be a solution for our older children as GoodNites have new products on shelves at Walmart stores. GoodNites* TRU-FIT* Underwear are machine washable underwear accompanied with absorbent disposable inserts to protect the child’s clothes, sheets and mattress, so children don’t wake saturated. Outstanding leakage protection is essential for children that wet the bed and with six layers of advanced absorbent technology wetness stays locked in for the ultimate nighttime protection. Zoe prefers these to her GoodNites underwear because she feels she isn’t wearing a cushiony diaper, though she has always liked her GoodNites. That being said, the disposable inserts are fairly thick, so it may take some getting used to for the first few times wearing these. Zoe can easily put the insert into the inside pocket of the underwear and remove. Ensure that the insert is tucked completely into the inside pocket for comfort and so the insert doesn’t bunch causing wetness on the underwear. These are easy for her to pull on/off and the insert stays in place. She loves the girl colors and says she may just stay with friends now, huge plus in my eyes! We bought the small/medium which I feel run a bit small as she is only 50lbs and they were slightly tight on the upper thigh area. If you have a child that wets the bed, be patient with them. It is not their fault. Bedwetting is common and children cannot be trained out of. Support your child if they are stressed about the situation or any situation. If you feel frustrated that your child wets the bed, just think how frustrated your older child must feel. Ensure them that it is not their fault, you’re not disappointed in them and that they are not the only child that wets the bed.
GoodNites* TRU-FIT* Underwear are available in starter packs and insert refill packs in Walmart and Walmart.com for boys and girls in sizes S/M and L/XL with colors and patterns for each size. You purchase the starter pack to have the washable underwear which includes two pairs of underwear and five absorbent inserts.
