We recently had the opportunity to interview director Mitch Davis, whose upcoming movie, “The Stray” will be in theaters on October 6th!
THE STRAY, tells the true story of a stray dog (“Pluto”) who saves the life (literally) of a struggling family in more ways than one. Pluto comes out of nowhere and quickly makes himself at home with the Davis family, who are on the brink of falling apart. This wonder dog manages to save a lost toddler, bring comfort and companionship to a hurting 9-year-old boy (Connor Corum; Heaven is for Real), help restore a marriage, and repair a broken father-son relationship. And there is more: On a backpacking trip, lightening struck, and had not Pluto been near dad Mitch Davis to take the brunt of the electricity, Mitch would have died.
I have been a fan of Mitch Davis’s work for a long time so this was a great opportunity being able to discuss his upcoming movie, The Stray.
1. Do you have any lasting effects from being hit by lightning?
THE BURN MARKS ALL HEARED AND THE HAIR THAT BURNED OFF GREW BACK. THE ONLY THING THAT DIDN’T REALLY HEAL WAS MY RIGHT EARDRUM WHICH BLEW OUT WHEN THE LIGHTNING STRUCK. IT NEVER REALLY HEALED PROPERLY. IT KEEPS RE-RUPTURING. AND IT AFFECTED MY BALANCE. I TEND TO TIP OVER EASILY, WHICH IS A LITTLE EMBARRASSING AND INCONVENIENT.
THE EVENTS DEPICTED IN THE MOVIE OCCURRED OVER 25 YEARS AGO SO PLUTO HIMSELF IS NO LONGER LIVING. BUT WE HAVE HAD DOGS EVER SINCE. PLUTO TAUGHT US HOW TO LOVE EACH OTHER UNCONDITIONALLY, HOW TO SLOW DOWN AND FOCUS ON EACH OTHER RATHER THAN LIFE’S BUSY-NESS. IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH FOR A DOG TO BE HAPPY. JUST FOOD AND WATER AND AN OCCASIONAL SCRATCH ON THE HEAD. WE COULD ALL TAKE A LESSON FROM THAT.
A PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER. TRUE STORY. I WAS GOING TO BE THE NEXT JERRY WEST.
THAT NOTHING ON THIS MATTERS MORE OR EVEN A MUCH AS FAMILIES. THAT ANGELS COME IN MANY FORMS. SOMETIMES THEY EVEN TAKE THE FORM OF A STRAY DOG.
MY FATHER BY FAR. HE WAS A GOOD AND KIND MAN WHO TOOK TIME TO LOVE AND NURTURE US, HIS CHILDREN. HE WAS A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR ME. I IMAGINE ALL OF MY SISTERS WOULD SAY IT WAS OUR MOTHER FOR THEM. BOTH SHE AND DAD PUT OUR FAMILY FIRST.
